Doctoral Dissertation at the College of Science Discusses the Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Evaluation of Complexes Derived from Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science, University of Mosul, held the doctoral dissertation defense on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, for the candidate Hala Munir Yahya Othman Al-Shukriji, entitled:

“Preparation, Characterization and Biological Evaluation of Metal Complexes Derived from Some Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs”

The session was attended by the Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, along with the Assistant Deans for Scientific and Administrative Affairs, a number of faculty members, and postgraduate students.

The dissertation focused on the synthesis and characterization of a series of metal complexes derived from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs using hydrazone-based ligands. The study involved structural and physicochemical characterization employing advanced spectroscopic and physical techniques, in addition to theoretical calculations using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses for selected samples.

The biological evaluation included antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, where the results demonstrated that the synthesized complexes exhibited higher inhibitory activity compared to free ligands and standard reference drugs.

The study also included biochemical and histological assessments using an animal model, revealing that the prepared complexes showed strong binding affinity toward target enzymes while reducing the toxic effects associated with traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These findings highlight their potential as promising candidates for the development of safer and more effective pharmaceutical agents.

The examination committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Maher Abdul Razzaq Mohammed, with membership of Prof. Dr. Nazik Mohammed Aziz, Asst. Prof. Dr. Khansa Shakir Ni’mah Allah, Asst. Prof. Dr. Farah Tareq Saeed, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Fathi Khalil, while the supervision was conducted by Prof. Dr. Sohba Ali Ahmed Al-Sabawi.

At the conclusion of the discussion, the Dean of the College of Science presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Prof. Dr. Nazik Mohammed Aziz from the University of Sulaymaniyah in recognition of her scientific contribution and participation in the examination committee.
