Master’s Thesis Discusses the Construction of Macrocyclic Schiff Base Compounds

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science, University of Mosul, discussed a Master’s thesis on Sunday, February 8, 2026, entitled:
“Construction and Characterization of Some New Macrocyclic Schiff Base Compounds Derived from Diamine and Diketone Derivatives”
submitted by Rozhan Othman Mohammed Salih from the Organic Chemistry Branch.
The thesis focused on the synthesis of a special class of Schiff bases known as macrocyclic and non-macrocyclic Schiff bases, owing to their significant scientific and practical importance in chemical and biological applications.
The research involved the preparation of several precursor compounds, including a dihydropyridine derivative and a dihydrazide derivative, followed by a series of one-step and two-step chemical reactions. These reactions yielded non-cyclic compounds that were subsequently transformed into macrocyclic compounds. In addition, several cyclic compounds were synthesized directly through suitable condensation reactions.
The synthesized compounds were characterized using melting point determination and various spectroscopic techniques, including Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (¹H-NMR and ¹³C-NMR).
The study also evaluated the biological activity of selected compounds. The results demonstrated that compound R10 exhibited superior activity against breast cancer cells compared with compound R19, in addition to showing remarkable biological activity against Exiguobacterium indicum bacteria.
The examination committee consisted of:
- Assistant Professor Dr. Huda Ahmed Bashir Al-Hamdani – Chairperson
- Assistant Professor Dr. Haifa Younis Hussein Darwish – Member
- Lecturer Dr. Ameera Mohammed Faraj Salih – Member
- Assistant Professor Dr. Muneera Yousif Raouf Alaa Al-Din – Member and Supervisor
At the conclusion of the defense, and on behalf of the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Professor Dr. Firas Ahmed Thanon, presented a Letter of Appreciation to Assistant Professor Dr. Huda Ahmed Bashir from the University of Zakho, in recognition of her efforts in traveling to the University of Mosul to participate in the examination committee and for her valuable scientific contributions and constructive academic observations, which enriched the discussion and enhanced the scientific quality of the thesis.
We extend our sincere wishes to our dear students for continued success and academic excellence.
