Faculty Member and Master’s Student from the College of Science Register Four Bacterial Isolates in the Global NCBI Database

As part of ongoing efforts to advance scientific research and document local microbial diversity, a faculty member from the Department of Biology, in collaboration with a master’s student, has successfully registered four bacterial isolates in the database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) as part of the research requirements for a master’s thesis.

The research was conducted under the supervision and participation of Assist. Prof. Dr. Wasan Saleh Hussein, in collaboration with master’s student Ahmed Haider Atiyah. The registered bacterial isolates belong to the following species:

  • Enterobacter hormaechei strain AhWa1
  • Escherichia coli strain AhWa2
  • Enterobacter mori strain AhWa4
  • Enterobacter ludwigii strain AhWa6

These bacterial isolates were recovered from the root nodules of broad bean (Vicia faba) plants treated with an aqueous extract of Teucrium polium. Molecular identification was carried out through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, after which the genetic sequences were deposited in the GenBank database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) under the following accession numbers:

  • PZ383904
  • PZ384630
  • PZ393265
  • PZ393213

This achievement reflects the College of Science’s commitment to supporting scientific research and documenting the molecular characteristics of indigenous bacterial isolates, making these data available to researchers worldwide. It also contributes to expanding global genetic databases and strengthening studies related to bacterial diversity and plant-associated microbiology.

The accomplishment highlights the distinguished scientific capabilities of the faculty members and postgraduate students of the Department of Biology and further reinforces the scientific presence of the University of Mosul through internationally recognized research outputs.

On this occasion, the Deanship of the College of Science, represented by Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, Dean of the College, extends its sincere congratulations to Assist. Prof. Dr. Wasan Saleh Hussein and master’s student Ahmed Haider Atiyah, wishing them continued success and many more outstanding scientific achievements.
