A scientific achievement of the Faculty of science teachers documenting the first Iraqi record of a species of sand flies using phenotypic and molecular diagnostics

In a new scientific achievement added to the record of research achievements of the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul, the teaching staff of the Department of life sciences, professor Dr. Munif Abdul Mustafa al-Hamdani and Dr. Yunus Ibrahim Muhammad Ali al-Jawari, succeeded in documenting the first record in Iraq of the sand fly species Sergentomyia babu babu Annandale (1910) based on phenotypic and Molecular Diagnostics, in a step contributing to enriching the database of biological and insect diversity in Iraq. The results of the study showed the registration of this species for the first time in Iraq after collecting its samples from the Hamdaniya, Hadar and Makhmour districts in Nineveh governorate, where its identity was confirmed through the combination of phenotypic traits and molecular diagnostic techniques, providing high accuracy in scientific documentation. The researchers also deposited three representative strains of this species in the global GenBank (GenBank) with serial numbers: PP856257 – PQ056783 – PQ063273, which makes its genetic data available to researchers and supports future studies related to its classification and spread. The results of the study were published in the Malaysian Journal of Science, a scientific journal indexed within the Scopus (Q3) database, under the title: First Report and Molecular Identification of Sergentomyia babu babu Annandale (1910) (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) in Iraq This achievement confirms the advanced level of scientific research at the Faculty of Science, and the importance of employing modern molecular techniques in documenting biodiversity and enhancing the scientific presence of Iraqi researchers at the international level. We wish the professors of our college continued success and giving. Government information and Communication Division Wednesday, July 1, 2026
