Master thesis discusses changes in the effectiveness of the enzyme aminoacylase in patients with gestational diabetes and polycystic ovaries

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master thesis entitled ” Study of changes in the effectiveness of the enzyme aminoacylase in patients with gestational diabetes and polycystic ovaries”, presented by master student Anfal Muhammad Iqbal Hashim Al-Tayar. Part of the discussion was attended by the dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, the Honorable, the administrative assistant, Mr. Dr. Mohammed Sobhi, the head of the Chemistry Department, Assistant Professor Dr. Firas Ahmed dhanon, as well as a number of Chemistry Department teachers and graduate students. The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the effectiveness of the enzyme aminoacylase (Aminoacylase) in patients with gestational diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome, and to study its relationship with oxidative stress and metabolic disorders, as a vital indicator that can be used in early diagnosis and follow-up the development of both pathological conditions. The study included the analysis of (230) blood serum samples collected from the city of Mosul, distributed among gestational diabetes patients, PCOS patients, along with the control totals, as well as measuring a number of biochemical indicators associated with oxidative stress and antioxidants. The results showed a clear disturbance in the balance between oxidative factors and antioxidants in both gestational diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome patients, represented by a significant increase in a number of enzymes and indicators associated with oxidative stress and inflammation, offset by a decrease in some antioxidant defense systems, especially clotathione. The study also showed that cases of gestational diabetes recorded higher levels of oxidative stress compared to PCOS, with a decrease in some protective enzymes and an increase in indicators of oxidative damage, while cases of polycystic ovaries showed partial compensatory responses to counteract this stress. The study also showed that a number of clinical and hormonal factors, such as previous miscarriage, stillbirth, family history, as well as advanced gestational age, contribute to an increase in the severity of oxidative stress and metabolic imbalance, while correlation analyzes revealed a close relationship between aminoacylase and oxidative stress indicators, which enhances the possibility of its adoption as a promising biomarker for assessing the severity of these pathological disorders and their diagnosis. The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Zikra Ali Fathi Alloush, and the membership of Dr. Zeina Abdel Moneim Mohamed Saleh and assistant professor Dr. Mohamed Bahri Hassan Abdel, while Dr. Louay Abdel Ali Hilali supervised the thesis and participated as a member of the discussion Committee. At the end of the discussion, the committee praised the sober scientific level of the message, stressing the importance of its results in the medical, diagnostic and clinical fields, as the study found that gestational diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome are associated with the occurrence of clear oxidative stress represented by high oxidative factors and low antioxidants, with greater severity in cases of gestational diabetes, and also showed that the enzyme aminoacylase represents a promising vital indicator that can be relied on in assessing the severity of oxidative stress associated with these pathological conditions.
