Doctoral dissertation discusses the adoption of modern molecular markers for the regulation of gene expression associated with dilated cardiomyopathy

On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Mosul discussed the tagged doctoral thesis: Determine the Relationship Between the Roles of Gene Regulation in Genes Responsible for Dilated Cardiomyopathy with Some Physiological Parameters The thesis was submitted by researcher Azhar Yunus dhanun Abdullah from the branch of Zoology, in the presence of a number of teachers of the Department of life sciences and graduate students. The thesis dealt with the study of the regulatory role of non-coding RNA molecules (ncRNA), in particular lncRNA FOXD2-AS1 and snorna-42, as well as the assessment of the expression level and diagnostic significance of a number of microRNA molecules, including miR-148a, mir-155, Mir-200A and Mir-208a in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and their adoption as biomarkers for early detection about the disease. The study also included the analysis of the relationship between the variation in the number of gene copies (Copy number Variation) and the level of expression of the genes LMNA, TNNT2, TTTN and MYH7, as well as the evaluation of the serum levels of the resulting proteins (β-MHC, titin, TNNT2 and lamin A/C) as physiologic variables of diagnostic importance in patients. The aim of the dissertation was to determine the relationship between gene expression and molecular indicators associated with dilated cardiomyopathy, to study the differences between male and female patients in the levels of molecular expression and biomarkers, as well as to assess the efficiency of non-coding RNA molecules using ROC curves to determine their sensitivity and specificity as non-invasive diagnostic indicators, as well as to conduct bioinformatic analyzes to draw regulatory networks linking microRNA and lncRNA molecules with genes responsible for the disease. The results of the study showed the possibility of adopting a number of ncRNA molecules and associated molecular indicators as promising biomarkers for the early diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy, as well as their contribution to understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating the disease, enhancing the chances of developing more accurate diagnostic tools and paving the way for future therapeutic prospects based on Molecular Medicine. The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Muntaha Mahmoud Daoud dhanoun, and the membership of Prof. Dr. Nashat Ghalib Mustafa Mohammed, Prof. Dr. Adnan Fadel Nasif Jassim, Prof. Dr. Fatima Qasim Mohammed Hassan, Assistant Professor Dr. Mahmoud Ahmed Mohammed Fakhri, while the thesis was supervised by Assistant Professor Dr. Abeer Atallah Ayed Jassim and Prof. Owais Mowaffak Hamid. On the sidelines of the discussion, the dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Professor Dr. Adnan Fadel Nasif Jassim, a lecturer at the Faculty of science at Tikrit University, in appreciation of his distinguished scientific participation in the membership of the discussion Committee, and in appreciation of his academic contributions to supporting scientific research and strengthening cooperation between Iraqi universities.
