Master thesis discusses the use of yeasts in improving soil fertility and enhancing agricultural sustainability

The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul, on Monday, August 10, 2026, discussed the master’s thesis tagged ” the use of yeasts in improving soil fertility and enhancing agricultural sustainability ” by student Israa Riad Ahmed Abdul-Jabouri from the specialty (Botany), part of which was attended by the dean of the Faculty, Professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim and a number of graduate teachers and students. The dissertation dealt with the isolation of yeasts from the soil of agricultural lands in the city of Mosul and their diagnosis based on phenotypic, microscopic and biochemical qualities, molecular confirmation of the diagnosis using PCR technology for ITS area, studying the effect of short-wave ultraviolet UVC radiation on the vitality of some yeasts, as well as evaluating their susceptibility to pesticide analysis using HPLC technology, and studying the effect of their filters in stimulating the growth of wheat plants. The study aimed to enable the benefit of local microorganisms; it was able to isolate 80 yeast isolates belonging to five genera, and recorded eight isolates of them in the global gene bank (NCBI), which represents a qualitative addition to the molecular database of yeasts isolated from local agricultural soils. The results also showed a different response of yeasts to ultraviolet radiation, mutagenic isolates demonstrated a higher ability to analyze the pesticide compared to non-mutagenic isolates with a higher decomposition efficiency after exposure to radiation. On the other hand, the study proved the efficiency of yeast filters, especially Pichia kudriavzevii E1, in stimulating the growth of wheat plants; the concentration of 15% recorded the best results in the indicators of vegetative, productive and physiological growth, which confirms the possibility of employing local yeasts in improving soil fertility and promoting sustainable agriculture.
