Master thesis discusses the role of non-coding RNA and regulation of the HK2 gene in breast cancer

The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the tagged master‘s thesis: “Role of Some Types of sncRNA Genes on Regulation of Hexokinase 2 (HK2) Gene Expression and Glycolysis Process in Women with Breast Cancer” Presented by researcher Safaa Omar ya’rib touhleh, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The study aimed to determine the level of hyperexpression of the HK2 gene in women with breast cancer, clarify the possible regulatory role of miRNA molecules, in particular miR-143 and miR-155, and their relationship with the expression of the HK2 gene. It also sought to assess the role of some non-coding RNA regulators, including lncRNAs and circRNAs, and their relationship to the regulation of glycolysis associated with the HK2 gene in breast cancer, as well as to study the Association of some genetic variants, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and copy number variations (CNVs), with susceptibility to breast cancer. The level of gene expression of the studied indicators was determined using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) technology, while the levels of CA15-3 and CF-DNA were measured by appropriate laboratory methods, statistical analyzes were also carried out to assess the relationship between the studied molecular indicators and breast cancer, along with assessing their diagnostic efficiency using ROC curve analysis. The results of the study showed the possibility of adopting a number of ncRNA molecules The associated molecular indicators are promising biomarkers for breast cancer diagnosis, as well as their contribution to understanding the molecular mechanisms regulating the disease, enhancing the opportunities for developing more accurate diagnostic tools and paving the way for future therapeutic prospects based on Molecular Medicine.
