Master thesis discusses the geochemical and environmental assessment of the mixed area south of Nineveh Governorate

On Thursday, September 3, 2026, the Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis entitled ” geochemical and environmental assessment of the AL-mukhlat area south of Nineveh Governorate”, presented by researcher Ali Ahmed Mohammed muhimid Al-Jubouri, in the presence of the dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim al-Taie, the head of the department, Dr. Omar khalouk Mohammed Sajid, and the rapporteur of the department, Dr. Saddam Isa Mustafa. The purpose of the letter was to conduct a geochemical assessment of the waters of the upper Tigris and Zab rivers before and after their confluence, and to determine the nature of changes in water quality, and the natural and human factors affecting them. The study included the analysis of (28) samples of surface water, the study of its physical and chemical properties, the main ions, heavy elements and nutrients, as well as the application of a number of pollution indicators and statistical and spatial analyses. The results showed that the interaction between water and rocks is one of the main factors controlling the chemistry of water, with varying human influences between the study sites. The results also showed the presence of spatial variation in some elements and nutrients, reflecting the different geochemical and environmental conditions along the riverbed. The letter recommended the need to adopt a periodic monitoring program for the water quality of the upper Tigris and Zab rivers, especially with regard to heavy elements and nutrients, emphasizing the importance of monitoring sources of discharge and pollution, and linking future studies to seasonal and hydrological variables, to contribute to the protection and sustainable management of Water Resources. The discussion Committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Sarmad Assi Ali from the Faculty of Science, University of Kirkuk, and the membership of assistant professor Dr. Mohammed Fawzi Omar and teacher Dr. Roa Mohammed Hassan Mahmoud, and the membership and supervision of assistant professor Dr. Falih Hassan Abbas Hamza. On the sidelines of the discussion, the dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Dr. Sarmad Assi Ali, in appreciation of his scientific efforts and active participation in the dissertation discussion Committee, and in appreciation of his giving and contributions to support the scientific and academic process. Our wishes to the researcher and to all graduate students and teachers of the Faculty of full-time success, excellence and creativity.
