Master thesis discusses the sedimentary model of plaspy formation in selected areas of northern Iraq

On Monday, September 7, 2026, the Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis tagged ” sedimentary model of Pliocene (middle – late Eocene) formation in selected sections of northern Iraq”, which was submitted by researcher kulistan Shaukat Mustafa al-atrushi, in the presence of the Department’s rapporteur, Dr. Saddam Isa Mustafa. The aim of the study was to build a sedimentary model of the formation of plasticity, through the study of rocks, microfacies, mineralogy and metamorphic processes, in order to determine the depositional environment and its stages of development. The study included conducting field work that included the description of rock sections and sampling, as well as the study of microscopic slides, XRD analysis, the study of microfacies and metamorphic processes. The results showed that the plaspi formation was deposited in a shallow marine environment restricted to an open lagoon Environment, with the predominance of the delamination process and the presence of a number of metamorphic processes that influenced the components of the formation. The study recommended additional studies of the lateral distribution of microfacies and metamorphic processes, with the adoption of more detailed geochemical and mineralogical analyses, in order to reach a more comprehensive understanding of the evolution of the formation of the plaspi and its sedimentary properties. The discussion Committee was chaired by the experienced professor Dr. Ali Ismail Abdullah Mohammed, the membership of assistant professor Dr. Falah Abdul Mohammed Azzawi and the teacher Dr. Noor Talal Ismail Taha, and the membership and supervision of Professor Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed Amin al-Haj. At the end of the discussion, the committee commended the scientific effort exerted and the importance of the study in the field of sedimentary geology and the interpretation of the depositional environments of the formations of northern Iraq.
