Master thesis discusses the evaluation of the effectiveness of the enzyme prolyl hydroxylase and its relationship to some biochemical variables

On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul discussed the master thesis entitled ” Evaluation of the effectiveness of prolyl hydroxylase enzyme and its relationship to some biochemical variables in patients with ulcerative colitis ” presented by student Mohammed Muthanna Salem al-Zuhairi, and attended by the dean of the Faculty of science, professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, at the Hall of Professor Dr. Saadallah Tawfik Suleiman for conferences in the Department of chemistry. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the enzyme prolyl hydroxylase-1 (Prolyl Hydroxylase-1) and some chemobiotic variants in blood serum in patients with ulcerative colitis, compare them with healthy individuals, as well as to study the influence of a number of factors associated with the disease. The study also included a genetic aspect represented in the analysis of the egln2 gene responsible for encoding the enzyme prolyl hydroxylase-1, as well as the study of DNA sequencing to detect possible genetic changes and mutations associated with enzyme levels and gene expression. The results showed a decrease in the level of gene expression of the Egln2 gene in all studied samples of patients, and this was associated with a decrease in the levels of the enzyme prolyl hydroxylase-1 in people with ulcerative colitis. The DNA sequencing study also revealed the presence of genetic mutations that may affect the process of gene expression and enzyme production, which may contribute to understanding the molecular mechanisms associated with the disease. The study highlights the importance of addressing the relationship between genetic changes, gene expression and the level of prolyl hydroxylase-1 enzyme in ulcerative colitis patients, providing scientific indicators that can be used in future studies related to the diagnosis of the disease and understanding its molecular mechanisms. The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Zikra Ali Fathi Alloush, with the membership of: assistant professor Dr. Rana Fadel Jassim Mohammed, teacher Dr. rafad Rabie Saadoun Mohammed, and under the supervision and membership of assistant professor Dr. Amal Taha Yassin al-jeraisi. At the end of the discussion, the committee praised the scientific effort exerted in the thesis and the importance of its topic in the field of Biochemistry and studies related to inflammatory diseases.
