Master thesis discusses the modern sandy deposits of the Khabur River in northern Iraq

The Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of science of Mosul University discussed, on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, the master’s thesis tagged ” texture and mineralization of modern sandy deposits of the Khabur River, northern Iraq ” submitted by researcher Halima Hikmat Mohammed said. The dissertation aimed at the volumetric analysis of modern sandy deposits of the Khabur River and the statement of statistical relationships between them, as well as conducting Petrographic and mineralogical analysis, including the study of heavy metals and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), to identify the sources of sediments and the depositional environment of the river. The study included a volumetric, Petrographic and mineralogical analysis of 14 samples of modern sandy deposits of the Khabur River in northern Iraq, as the results showed the predominance of medium immature sand, represented by Rocky arenite (Lithic Arenite), derived from igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary source rocks located within the regions of Turkey and northern Iraq. The results also showed that the sand is medium-sized and sorted, and that its transfer was carried out through the mechanisms of rolling–attachment and attachment–rolling, as mineral and texturally immature rock sand, belonging to igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary sources, with its impact on Tectonic and hydrothermal activities in the river basin. The study recommended the conduct of detailed geochemical analyses of heavy metals, the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to study the surfaces of granules, as well as expanding the scope of the study of modern sediments to include gravel size, contributing to a more comprehensive clarification of the characteristics and river sediments. The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Zaid Abdul Wahab Malek, and the membership of both Prof. Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed Amin and the teacher Dr. Roa Mohammed Hassan Mahmoud, and the membership and supervision of Assistant Prof. Dr. Falah Abdul Mohammed. This study comes within the efforts of the Department of Earth and petroleum Sciences in providing geological and sedimentary studies with scientific research that contributes to understanding the sources of sediments, depositional processes and geological development of river basins in northern Iraq.
