Scientific training course on green mushrooms and the sustainable circular economy

The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Science held a scientific training course within the continuing education program, entitled “The green mushroom revolution: from waste to wealth to achieve a sustainable circular economy”, during the period from Sunday, September 20, 2026 to Thursday, September 24, 2026, in the Plant Physiology Laboratory at the department, in the presence of a number of department teachers and students. The session aimed to highlight the scientific, economic and environmental importance of mushroom fungi, and their role in investing organic and agricultural waste and converting them into valuable resources and products, in a way that enhances the concepts of sustainability and circular economy, and contributes to reducing the accumulation of waste and its environmental impacts. The course included a number of scientific topics, including the definition of large fungi (mushrooms), their classification, importance and applications, the concept of the “green mushroom revolution” and its role in converting organic waste into products of economic value, as well as the types of mushrooms suitable for the investment of agricultural waste rich in cellulose and lignin, the mechanisms of extracellular enzyme secretion and their role in the analysis of these residues. The course also dealt with the concept of circular economy and the principles of reducing resource consumption, reuse and recycling, the role of waste investment in achieving sustainable development, as well as the relationship between mushroom fungi and forest trees and their role in the analysis of organic matter and nutrient cycling, symbiotic relationships between fungi and tree roots, in particular mycorrhiza and its role in enhancing the absorption of water and mineral elements and supporting the growth of trees and their ability to withstand environmental conditions. The course was presented by A.M.Dr. Jahan Muwaffaq Al-Rawi, A.M.Dr. Nihal Yunus, A.M.Dr. Anfal MU’ayyad Jalal-ud-Din, m.Dr. Raghad Abdul Razzaq Jamal. This course is part of the continuing education activities in the life sciences department, and within the framework of enhancing scientific and training activities, exchanging experiences and modern knowledge, and introducing the vital applications of fungi in waste investment and supporting environmental and economic sustainability. Our wishes to the course organizers and participants for continued success, further giving and scientific excellence.
