Master thesis discusses the stratigraphy of the foraminifera of the aliji formation in the Zakho region of northern Iraq

The Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul, on Sunday, October 18, 2026, discussed the master’s thesis tagged “stratigraphy of foraminifera of the aliji formation in the bihri section, Zakho region, northern Iraq”, submitted by master’s student Mohammed Jassim tamer, in the presence of the dean of the Faculty of science, professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, and the head of the department, Dr. Omar khalok Mohammed Sajid. The study aimed to describe the rock characteristics of the aliji formation and determine the boundaries of the upper and lower seam, as well as to determine its relative age in the bihri section of the Zakho region in northern Iraq, based on floating foraminifera assemblages, as the study included the collection and analysis of 45 models. The results of the study showed that the age of the aliji formation in the Behri section dates back to the Paleogene era, specifically the early Danian. The study recommended conducting parallel biostratigraphic comparisons using microfossils, including calcareous nanofossils, pollen fossils and spores (palynological), in different tectonic zones, to enhance the accuracy of biostratigraphic determination in Iraq, as well as conducting geochemical studies. The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Maha Abdul Hamid Mustafa, and the membership of assistant professor Dr. Mahfouz Abdullah Ali Hussein, teacher Dr. Abdul Rahman Ahmed Qasem bamrni, and assistant professor Dr. Abdullah Sultan Shihab as a member and supervisor. At the end of the discussion, the dean of the Faculty of Science presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Dr. Abdulrahman Ahmed Qasim from the University of Duhok, in appreciation of his concern for traveling and participating in the student’s discussion. Our wishes to the researcher Mohammed Jassim tamer and to all graduate students and teachers of the Faculty of Science full-time success, excellence and scientific creativity.
