Workshop on plague disease, causes of its spread and methods of diagnosis

On Monday, October 19, 2026, the Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of Mosul University held a scientific workshop entitled “plague disease: causes, prevalence and diagnosis”, in the presence of the head of the Department, Professor Dr. Amjad Abdul Hadi Mohammed, the Department’s rapporteurs, and a number of his teachers and students, as part of the Department’s scientific activities aimed at promoting awareness of infectious diseases and methods of diagnosis and Prevention. The workshop was presented by the dean of the Faculty of science, professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, and assistant professor Dr. Angham Jabbar Alwan, and dealt with the plague disease caused by Yersinia pestis bacteria, with a review of its epidemiological history and the most prominent pandemics witnessed by the world and their health and human repercussions. The workshop also dealt with the main clinical types of the disease, namely bubonic plague, septicemic plague and pneumonic plague, the mechanisms of transmission of infection, in particular the role of fleas and rodents in the spread of bacteria, as well as their biological and microscopic characteristics and virulence factors. The workshop reviewed laboratory diagnostic methods, including microscopic and serological examinations, molecular techniques, especially polymerase chain reaction (PCR), as well as therapeutic and preventive strategies, stressing the importance of early diagnosis, rapid therapeutic intervention, vector and rodent control, and strengthening epidemiological surveillance to reduce the spread of the disease. This workshop comes within the framework of the life sciences department’s keenness to activate scientific research, spread health culture, expand the knowledge of teachers and students in the fields of microbiology and transitional diseases, and enhance awareness of the importance of preventing infectious diseases. Our wishes to the workshop organizers are good luck and success, and to continue scientific and academic giving.
