The Political Geography of Minerals Used in Renewable Energy

The Department of Geography at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Mosul, discussed on Wednesday, 27 August 2025, a study entitled “The Political Geography of Minerals Used in Renewable Energy: Selected Countries,” in the presence of faculty members and postgraduate students.

The research, conducted by student Mudhar Taher Eidan Issa, analyzed minerals used in renewable energy industries, focusing on the relationship between their uneven geographical distribution and the geopolitical changes driven by the global transition to renewable energy. The study showed that these minerals have evolved from traditional raw materials into strategic tools shaping international alliances, due to the concentration of reserves and production in specific countries.

The study concluded that the transition to renewable energy is not only a technical shift but also a complex geopolitical process, highlighting the need for international cooperation to ensure a fair transition, protect producing countries’ rights, reduce environmental and social impacts, and support sustainable energy security.
