Social Meaning in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

The Department of English Language at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Mosul, discussed on Sunday, April 19, 2026, a Master’s thesis entitled: “Investigating Social Meaning in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.”

A number of postgraduate students from the Department of English Language attended part of the discussion.

The study, submitted by the student Amina Ziad Bashir, examined the social meaning in the well-known novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The thesis aimed to analyze the social meaning of selected dialogues from the novel based on Charles Fillmore’s theory of Frame Semantics.

The study concluded that the frame of authority is the most dominant in the novel, with other frames intersecting with it. It also showed that characters express authority linguistically through various means, such as arbitrary commands and exaggerated punishments.
