College of Environmental Sciences

Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Professor Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Tai, and with the follow-up of the Head of the Department of Environmental Health, Dr. Mohammed Yahya Ali, and to promote environmental awareness and highlight the importance of preserving biodiversity in light of current climate challenges, first-year students conducted a field survey of the University of Mosul’s gardens to study biodiversity using the renowned Shannon-Wiener Index for assessing biodiversity. The students were accompanied by a select group of faculty members from the department.

Samples were collected and data were analyzed for plant and animal species in the university gardens.

The experiment aimed to enhance students’ understanding of the importance of biodiversity and its role in ecological balance, to apply scientific standards such as the Shannon-Wiener Index for measuring biodiversity, and to strengthen their field research and environmental data analysis skills.
