An awareness workshop entitled “Breast Cancer: From Awareness to Safety”

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the Department of Biology Sciences at the College of Science organized a distinguished scientific workshop in cooperation with the Student Activities Division and the Women’s Affairs Committee at the College, and in coordination with the Women’s Affairs Unit at the University Presidency. This workshop, part of the Continuing Education Program, was titled: “Breast Cancer: From Awareness to Safety.”

The workshop aimed to raise health awareness within the academic community regarding the importance of early detection of breast cancer and methods of prevention. It included various scientific topics presented by a select group of faculty members from the department.

The workshop opened with a presentation by Assistant Professor Dr. Angham Jabbar Alwan, who provided a comprehensive introduction to breast cancer, explaining its causes and contributing factors.

The second presentation was given by Assistant Professor Dr. Firas Hamid Akhdhir presented a session outlining the stages of breast cancer development and spread from the site of infection to other parts of the body. He also provided a simplified explanation of the TNM system used to classify cancer stages and discussed the genes, hormones, and molecular mechanisms responsible for the disease’s development.

In the third session, Dr. Rana Waad Allah Younis presented local and global statistics on breast cancer, detailing incidence and survival rates at different stages, as well as analyzing the most significant factors contributing to its spread.

The workshop concluded with a session by Dr. Sabreen Jabbar Alwan, who addressed the topic of early detection of breast cancer and its importance in reducing mortality rates and achieving high cure rates. She also clarified the age groups that should focus on early screening, the factors that increase or decrease the risk of developing the disease, and reviewed the early detection program, which includes monthly self-examination, clinical examination, and mammogram.

This workshop was part of the University of Mosul’s ongoing efforts to raise health awareness, promote a culture of prevention, and support continuing education initiatives to serve the community.
