PhD Dissertation Discusses the Effects of Galangal Bioactive Compounds on Oxidative Stress Conditions

The Department of Biology at the College of Science, University of Mosul, discussed a PhD dissertation on Sunday, February 8, 2026, entitled:

“Histological and Physiological Responses to the Effects of Bioactive Compounds of Galangal Plant in Albino Rats Exposed to Oxidative Stress”

submitted by Raya Ghassan Fathi Al-Obaidi from the Department of Biology.

The dissertation investigated the effects of galangal (Alpinia galanga) root oil on the histological and physiological responses of rats exposed to oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide. The study included the assessment of several oxidative stress biomarkers, analysis of gene expression related to heat shock proteins and antioxidant enzymes, as well as evaluation of DNA damage enzyme activity in liver and kidney tissues.

The research also examined pathological histological alterations and investigated the localized expression of inflammatory markers IL-6 and TNF-α using immunohistochemistry techniques.

The examination committee was chaired by:

  • Professor Dr. Muneef Abd Mustafa Suleiman – Chairperson

with membership of:

  • Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammed Hussein Mikhael Hassan
  • Professor Dr. Fatima Qasim Mohammed Hassan
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Firas Fares Raja Ajil
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Baydaa Ghanim Mohammed Ibrahim

and supervised by:

  • Assistant Professor Dr. Waad Sabri Shaher Hussein
  • Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Saeed Al-Jalabi

At the conclusion of the defense, and on behalf of the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the Head of the Department of Biology, Professor Dr. Amjad Abdulhadi Mohammed, presented a Letter of Appreciation to Assistant Professor Dr. Firas Fares Raja Ajil from the University of Tikrit, in recognition of his scientific contributions, his efforts in traveling to participate in the examination committee, and his valuable academic observations that enriched the discussion and enhanced the academic quality of the dissertation.

We extend our sincere wishes to our dear students for continued success and academic excellence.
