Bacterial Isolates Registration in the NCBI Database

As part of its ongoing efforts to support scientific research and document molecular data, a research team from the Department of Biology, College of Science – University of Mosul, has successfully registered two bacterial isolates in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database, reflecting the department’s active academic contribution in microbiological research.

The work was carried out under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Wasan Saleh Hussein, with the participation of undergraduate research students: Mohammed Dhahir, Khalid Ramadan Fattah, and Maryam Rifaat. The team conducted bacterial isolation and identification using advanced molecular biology techniques.

The registered bacterial isolates include:

  • Bacillus haynesii strain WMKM
  • Peribacillus simplex strain WMKM

These strains were isolated from soil samples collected from beneath fig trees in the Sinjar district. Molecular identification was performed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing, a highly reliable method for accurate bacterial classification.

The genetic sequences were officially deposited in the GenBank database (NCBI) under the accession numbers:

  • PZ282049
  • PZ282048

This achievement contributes to the enrichment of global molecular databases with precise genetic information, supporting researchers in studying bacterial diversity and its various applications.

We extend our best wishes to our students for continued success, and to our academic staff for further excellence and achievement.
