Graduate Seminar Session for Postgraduate Students in the Department of Geology and Petroleum

As part of supporting scientific research and enhancing the academic capabilities of postgraduate students, the Department of Geology and Petroleum / College of Science, University of Mosul, held a scientific seminar on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, presented by Master’s student Umair Mohammed Musab under the title:

“Petrographic and Mineralogical Study of Sandstone Successions in the Injana Formation in Outcrops Northeast of Mosul, Northern Iraq”

The seminar was supervised by Asst. Prof. Dr. Falah Abdul Mohammed Al-Maamari, and attended by the Head of the Department, a number of faculty members, and postgraduate students.

The study focused on conducting grain-size analysis and mineralogical investigations (petrography and heavy minerals) of sandstone rocks from the Injana Formation exposed in northeastern Mosul. The aim was to interpret the depositional environment, identify the source area, and assess the effects of tectonic activity and weathering processes on these sediments.

Field samples were collected from multiple locations within the study area, and the sandstone sequences were analyzed through granulometric, petrographic, and heavy mineral studies.

The results indicated that the Injana Formation consists of immature sediments derived from tectonically active source regions. The heavy mineral assemblage showed a dominance of lithic carbonate fragments, while the low abundance of ultra-stable minerals (ZTR index) suggests a short transport distance.

The seminar concluded with fruitful discussions and scientific exchange among participants, contributing to the development of research skills and enhancing the academic level of postgraduate students in the College of Science.
