College of Science Lecturer Participates in Master’s Thesis Examination at the University of Duhok

As part of strengthening academic cooperation and scientific knowledge exchange between universities, Asst. Prof. Dr. Lamia Adnan Sarsam, a lecturer in the Department of New and Renewable Energy at the College of Science, University of Mosul, participated as a member of the examination committee for a Master’s thesis at the College of Science, University of Duhok, on Thursday, April 23, 2026.
The thesis was entitled:
“Phytochemical profiling of almond shells and biosynthesis of Nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots for colorimetric detection of Fe³⁺”
and was submitted by the student Bijin Hekmat Hassan.
The study explored the potential utilization of degraded organic materials from almond shells as a rich source of bioactive compounds that can be employed in the synthesis of environmentally friendly nanomaterials. These materials serve as carbon sources, reducing agents, and stabilizing agents. The findings also highlighted the importance of compounds such as flavonoids in biomedical applications, particularly as antioxidants.
The study further demonstrated—for the first time—the potential use of biosynthesized carbon quantum dots as a colorimetric sensor for ferric ions (Fe³⁺). The developed nanosensor showed high efficiency in analyzing real water samples, opening promising applications in environmental monitoring and biotechnology.
At the conclusion of the defense, Asst. Prof. Dr. Lamia Adnan Sarsam was honored with a certificate of appreciation from the college deanery in recognition of her scientific contribution and active role in the examination committee.
The College of Science extends its best wishes to all its faculty members for continued success in their academic careers.
