PhD Dissertation Explores the Determination of Pharmaceutical Compounds Using Spectroscopic and Voltammetric Techniques

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science, University of Mosul, discussed a PhD dissertation on Thursday, 21 May 2026, entitled:
“Determination of Some Pharmaceutical Compounds Using Various Spectroscopic and Voltammetric Techniques”
submitted by doctoral candidate Enas Samir Dhannoun Mahmoud Al-Malahimo, in the presence of the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim.
The study aimed to develop direct and indirect spectroscopic and electrochemical methods for the determination of four pharmaceutical compounds, most notably Methotrexate, an anticancer drug, and Naloxone Hydrochloride, an opioid antagonist.
The first part of the research focused on the development of several spectroscopic methods, including azo-coupling and oxidation–reduction techniques employing environmentally friendly reagents. These methods were evaluated statistically and environmentally, demonstrating satisfactory analytical performance and a high degree of environmental sustainability.
The electrochemical aspect of the study involved the design of novel sensors based on electropolymerization and gold nanoparticles to achieve high sensitivity and enable the determination of pharmaceutical compounds at extremely low concentrations, reaching 10⁻¹¹ M.
The final sections of the dissertation focused on the synthesis of a new Schiff base ligand and its application in the development of modified electrochemical electrodes for the indirect determination of Naloxone Hydrochloride. The developed method demonstrated superior sensitivity, selectivity, and a wide linear range.
The examination committee was chaired by Professor Emeritus Dr. Muadh Abdullah Najm and included:
- Professor Dr. Hanaa Shukr Mahmoud
- Assistant Professor Dr. Thaera Idrees Younis
- Assistant Professor Dr. Nuha Mohammed Yahya
- Assistant Professor Dr. Rana Hassan Ahmed
The dissertation was supervised by and examined with the participation of:
- Professor Dr. Nabil Subeeh Othman
- Professor Dr. Amer Dhannoun Abdulrahman
The committee commended the dissertation for its high scientific quality and its significant practical applications in the medical and diagnostic fields.
On behalf of the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Assistant Professor Dr. Firas Ahmed Dhannoun, presented a Letter of Appreciation to Assistant Professor Dr. Thaera Idrees Younis from the Northern Technical University in recognition of her valuable contribution to the examination committee.
We extend our best wishes to the College’s students and faculty members for continued success and academic excellence.
