Workshop Entitled “Can Biomass Be an Alternative to Fossil Fuels?”

The Department of New and Renewable Energies organized a scientific workshop entitled “Can Biomass Be an Alternative to Fossil Fuels?” on the morning of Monday, 8 June 2026, at the Ibn Sina Hall in the department, with the participation of faculty members, students, researchers, and specialists interested in the field.

The workshop introduced the concepts of fossil fuels and biofuels, explaining that biofuels are renewable fuels produced from organic materials such as plants, algae, and agricultural residues, and are used as alternatives to fossil fuels including petroleum, coal, and natural gas.

The workshop also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of using biofuels as substitutes for fossil fuels, highlighting the major types of biofuels and the production processes used to obtain them. It emphasized that biofuels produce lower carbon dioxide emissions because the carbon dioxide is absorbed during plant growth, thereby reducing their environmental impact. Despite existing challenges, biofuels remain a promising option for reducing dependence on finite fossil resources and mitigating environmental pollution, particularly with continued advances in production technologies.

The workshop was delivered by Dr. Hamed Abdullah Saleh, who presented a comprehensive scientific overview supported by recent examples, generating active discussion and engagement among the participants.

This workshop forms part of the scientific activities regularly organized by the Department of New and Renewable Energies in support of scientific research and to promote awareness of sustainable energy among students and researchers.

We wish the faculty members of our College continued success and excellence.
