Master thesis discusses a phenotypic and genetic study of pathogenic bacteria isolated from bedsore infections

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, the Department of life sciences at the Faculty of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis tagged ” phenotypic and genetic study of pathogenic bacteria isolated from bedsore infections in Nineveh Governorate ” presented by master’s student Mustafa Basman Idris from the microbiology branch. The dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, and the Administrative Assistant, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Sobhi, along with a number of faculty teachers and graduate students, attended part of the discussion. The thesis aimed at isolating and diagnosing the pathogenic bacteria that cause bedsore infections both externally and molecularly, studying their pathogenetic characteristics and the extent of their resistance to antibiotics, as well as evaluating the effectiveness of some natural remedies in reducing their growth. The study resulted in the isolation and diagnosis of a number of bacterial species, including Staphylococcus arlettae, which was recorded for the first time globally from bedsore infections, along with the registration of four other pathogenic bacterial strains in the global GenBank (GenBank) of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). The study also included comparing bacterial species isolated from bedsore patients with normal bacteria isolated from the skin of healthy people, in addition to assessing the sensitivity of isolates to antibiotics and detecting some resistance genes, including bla-NDM and BLA-OXA-48, as the results showed a significant increase in the resistance of bacterial isolates to antibiotics. The thesis also examined a number of virulence factors, such as the formation of biofilms, the production of lecithinase, protease and lipase enzymes, as well as the production of iron carriers (Siderophores), where pathological isolates showed a variation in their ability to produce these factors. The results showed that Mountain Honey achieved the highest effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria compared to the plant extracts used in the study, which confirms the possibility of using it as an auxiliary natural remedy, especially in light of the constantly increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. The study also confirmed the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of bedsores, because of its role in reducing serious complications, foremost of which is bacterial blood poisoning (Sepsis), and contributing to accelerating wound healing and improving the chances of recovery. The discussion Committee was chaired by the experienced professor Dr. Basma Ahmed Abdullah, the membership of the assistant professor Dr. Khansa Muhammad Yunus, and the teacher Dr. Sahra Idris Hamid, while the assistant professor Dr. Inas Abdel Moneim Hussein supervised the message and participated as a member of the discussion Committee. At the end of the discussion, the dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to the experienced professor Dr. Basma Ahmed Abdullah from Al-Qabas College, in appreciation of her active participation in the discussion Committee, her contribution to enhancing academic cooperation between universities, and in support of the scientific and research career. The discussion Committee praised the scientific level of the thesis and the importance of its results in the fields of microbiology and Medical Sciences, for providing scientific data that contribute to understanding the bacteria that cause bed sores, the mechanisms of their resistance to antibiotics, and opening new horizons to take advantage of natural remedies in reducing their spread.
