Research Team from the College of Science Registers Eight New Mung Bean Varieties in the Global NCBI Database

A research team from the Department of Biology at the College of Science has successfully registered eight new varieties of mung bean (Vigna radiata) for the first time in the database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), marking a significant scientific achievement that adds to the College’s academic and research accomplishments.

The research was conducted under the supervision of Professor Dr. Jinan Abdul Khaliq Saeed from the Department of Biology and Professor Dr. Rana Tariq Yahya from the Department of Medical Physics, with the participation of PhD student Ronaq Ahmed Ibrahim.

The findings were achieved following the treatment of mung bean seeds with gamma radiation to induce molecular-level alterations in the gene responsible for the production of globulin protein. These treatments resulted in the development of new plant varieties exhibiting distinct molecular variations.

The genetic sequences of these newly developed varieties were officially deposited in the GenBank database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) under the following accession numbers:

PX108305
PX108306
PX233154
PX233155
PX233156
PX233157
PX233158
PX233159

This achievement reflects the College’s commitment to supporting scientific research activities and enhancing the documentation of molecular data related to plant varieties. Making such data available to researchers contributes to the advancement of genetic studies and research in plant improvement and genetic diversity.

We extend our sincere wishes to our faculty members and dear students for continued success, excellence, and scientific achievement.
