Graduate Seminar for Postgraduate Students in the Department of Geology and Petroleum

As part of supporting scientific research and enhancing academic capabilities, M.Sc. student Marwa Khazal Mahmoud from the Department of Geology and Petroleum / College of Science presented a graduate seminar in the field of Sedimentary Rocks on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, attended by a number of faculty members and postgraduate students of the department.

The seminar was entitled:

“A Sedimentological Study of the Late Jurassic Naokelekan Formation in Selected Sections of Northeastern Iraq”

under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Mohammed Amin Al-Haj.

The study aimed to identify the petrographic components and diagenetic processes affecting the formation, characterize its lithofacies, and establish the relationship between the depositional environment and the sedimentary basin.

The research was based on two main aspects:

  • Field Study: Included the description of the selected sections and the collection of rock samples from the Warti and Halabja areas.
  • Laboratory Study: Included the preparation of thin sections and their examination using a polarized microscope, in addition to X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis conducted at the laboratories of the Industrial Research and Development Authority in Baghdad to identify the constituent minerals.

The seminar witnessed fruitful scientific discussions and an exchange of expertise between faculty members and students, contributing to the enhancement of research skills and academic development.

We wish our dear students continued success and academic excellence.
