College of Science Discusses PhD Dissertation on the Development of Green Spectroscopic Methods for Pharmaceutical Analysis

The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science discussed a PhD dissertation entitled “Development of Different Analytical Methods for the Determination of Some Pharmaceutical Compounds” on Thursday, February 12, 2026.
The dissertation was presented by Safaa AbdulAleem Ahmed Zakaria, a PhD candidate in Analytical Chemistry. Her research focused on developing a variety of spectroscopic methods for the determination of eight pharmaceutical compounds, with particular emphasis on improving analytical sensitivity and accuracy while minimizing the environmental impact of analytical procedures.
The study employed fourth-derivative spectrophotometry for the simultaneous determination of pharmaceutical mixtures without the need for prior separation. It also utilized green-synthesized silver nanoparticles, along with various reagents and dyes, as part of the analytical process. Furthermore, internationally recognized green chemistry assessment tools were applied to evaluate the environmental sustainability and ecological impact of the proposed methods.
The results demonstrated high sensitivity and excellent linearity across a wide concentration range. Statistical validation confirmed the suitability of all proposed methods for routine and research applications in pharmaceutical analysis.
The examination committee was chaired by:

At the conclusion of the defense, the committee commended the dissertation for its strong scientific quality and valuable findings, particularly in the field of environmentally friendly analytical chemistry. The committee highlighted the practical applicability of the developed methods and their potential contributions to both the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.
The dissertation aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
On behalf of the Dean of the College of Science, Prof. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Prof. Firas Ahmed Dhanoon, presented a Letter of Appreciation to Prof. Kamiran Shukur Hussein in recognition of his distinguished scientific contributions, his leadership of the examination committee, and his constructive academic observations that enriched both the dissertation and the defense proceedings.
The College of Science extends its sincere congratulations and best wishes to its postgraduate students for continued success, academic excellence, and further scientific achievements in their future careers.
