The Department of life sciences at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul, on Sunday, August 9, 2026, discussed a master’s thesis tagged ” the toxic and repellent effect of turmeric oil against the housefly Musca domestica L ” by student Yusra Mohammed Jassim al-Mawla from the specialty (Zoology). The thesis dealt with the study of the possibility of using extracts of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa L) as a natural and safe alternative to control housefly, and the study of the physiological and behavioral impact of the extract on the different phases of the insect, supporting integrated and safe pest management strategies. The study not only proved the anabolic and inhibitory effect of the extract, but also linked it to the mechanism of multiple dosing effect, and divided the effectiveness according to varying concentrations ranging from behavioral inhibition and cumulative toxicity with accurate statistical evidence. The study aimed to diagnose the active compounds in the extract; the analysis of (GC-MS) showed the diagnosis of highly effective compounds, such as (ar-Tormerone) and(ar-Curcumin) for the first time in record proportions in the extracts used against this insect, which opens new research horizons for their use as alternatives to chemical pesticides. The study also witnessed the isolation and characterization of five strains of housefly in Mosul, and their official deposit in the global gene bank (NCBI) with record accession numbers, which is the first molecular characterization of its kind for houseflies spread in Ninawa governorate and an original scientific addition to biological studies. At the end of the discussion, on behalf of the dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim al-Taie, the head of the Department of Life Sciences, Dr. Amjad Abdul Hadi Mohammed, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to assistant professor Dr. Sufyan Haji sido from Zakho University in Duhok Governorate, in appreciation of his diligence in traveling and his valuable efforts exerted in discussing the student.
