Master thesis discusses the life stratigraphy of calcareous nanoliths in the formation of the controversy of northwestern Iraq

The Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul, on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, discussed the master’s thesis tagged ” life stratigraphy of calcareous nanoliths to form a controversy in the well (Az_29) in northwestern Iraq ” by master’s student Ahmed Abdul Ahmed Khalaf Al-Haji, in the presence of the head of the department Dr. Omar khalouq Mohammed Sajid and a number of department teachers and graduate students. The study dealt with the classification of calcareous nanofossils (Calcareous Nannofossils) of stratigraphic rock sequences belonging to the Jadala formation (lutetian – pribonian) in the Ain Zala oil field through well no.Az.29) north-western Iraq, as well as determining its stratigraphic zone and extrapolating the ancient climate prevailing in that time period. The main results and conclusions of the study : A broad phylogenetic diagnosis: (45) species belonging to (17) genera of calcareous nanofossils have been diagnosed, including (36) previously named species, two similar species, and(7) currently left open-named species. – Identification of life zones and age: three main zones were identified, and the first zone was divided into three secondary sub-life zones (in descending order from the newest at the top to the oldest at the bottom): Discoaster barbadiensis Interval Subbiozone (CP15) Reticulofenestra umbilicus Interval Subbiozone (CP14) Nannotetrina cf. quadrata interval Range Biozone (CP13) c- Ericsonia formosa Interval Subbiozone (CP13c) b- Chiasmolithus gigas total Range Subbiozone (CP13b) a- Nannotetrina alata Interval Subbiozone (CP13a) Based on this region, the age of the formation was determined as (middle Eocene – upper Eocene). Paleoclimate extrapolation: the study concluded through the indicative species that the studied stratigraphic sequences were deposited in a warm water environment within subtropical to tropical zones. The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Fares najras Hassan (University of Tikrit), and the membership of: Assistant professor Dr. Maha Abdul Hamid Mustafa, teacher Dr. Rana Abdul Ilah Mahmoud Under the supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Omar Ahmed moloud Al-Badrani. At the end of the discussion, on behalf of the dean of the Faculty of science, professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim al-Taie, the head of the department, Dr. Omar khalouk Mohammed Sajid, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Professor Dr. Fares najras Hassan from the Faculty of science, Tikrit University, in appreciation of his trouble traveling and chairing the discussion Committee.
