The Department of Earth and petroleum sciences at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul, on Thursday, August 27, 2026, discussed the master’s thesis tagged ” life stratigraphy of calcareous nanostructures for nucleicane formation of a section in northern Iraq ” by master’s student Moaz Ahmed Fadel Mohammed al-Mashhadani, in the presence of the head of the department, Dr. Omar khalouk Mohammed Sajid, and a number of department teachers and graduate students. The dissertation dealt with the classification of calcareous nanofossils (Calcareous Nannofossils) of the rock stratigraphic sequences belonging to the nauklikan formation in the study section located within the northern flank of the Sara – surdash fold extending from Sulaymaniyah to Dukan district in north-eastern Iraq, as well as accurately determining the age of the formation and extrapolating the conditions of the climate and the ancient depositional environment. The main results and conclusions of the study : Distinct qualitative diagnosis: the study resulted in the diagnosis of (36) species belonging to (15) genera of calcareous nanofossils, including( 28) previously named species and (currently left open-named species. – Identification of three life zones: based on the diagnosed crowds and the types of function, three main life zones have been identified (arranged from the oldest at the bottom to the newest at the top), namely: Cyclagelosphaera wiedmannii Total Range Biozone (NJT12) Lotharingius sigillatus Interval Biozone (NJT13a) Helenea staurolithina Partial Range Biozone (NJT13b) Based on this, it was concluded that the age of the nuclekan formation dates back to the (late calovian – Oxfordian). Extrapolation of climate and Paleoenvironment: biomarkers from the function species indicated that the nauclican formation was deposited in a deep and warm marine environment under subtropical to tropical climatic conditions. The study recommended the need to conduct detailed and extensive stratigraphic studies to determine the life zones in the typical sections of all geological formations in Iraq, which contributes to providing an integrated scientific picture of the age and environmental differences between them.
