Master thesis discusses the preparation and diagnosis of superabsorbent hydrogels and the study of their loading of the drug and its sustainable release

The Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Science – University of Mosul, on Sunday, September 6, 2026, discussed the master’s thesis tagged ” preparation and diagnosis of superabsorbent hydrogels and studying their loading of the drug and its sustainable release”, which was presented by the student Moataz Zidan Hamid Abdul-Jabouri, on the Hall of Professor Dr. Yousef Abdullah Shihab for discussions. The aim of the study was to prepare and evaluate a group of three-dimensional hydrogels with high water absorption capacity, by linking and grafting a number of natural and synthetic polymers, including chitosan, alginates, starch and gum Arabic, using polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer, in order to improve their mechanical, thermal and structural properties and enhance their effective functional groups to serve medical and pharmaceutical applications. The study included the preparation of six types of hydrogels and the formation of chemically interconnected polymer networks using N,N’ – Methylenebisacrylamide, and physically using Sodium Hexametaphosphate, as well as the diagnosis of the prepared models using a number of advanced technologies, including FT-IR, TGA, Xrd, FESEM and Weds. The results showed that these superabsorbent hydrogels can be used as advanced drug delivery and release control systems, as the chemically related Chitosan-g-PEG and alginate-g-PEG hydrogels were selected to load the Levetiracetam drug used in the treatment of epilepsy. The results also showed the superiority of Chitosan-g-PEG hydrogel in the efficiency of drug loading and its behavior in sustainable and orderly editing compared to alginate hydrogel, along with its good response to pH changes in various media (pH 2, pH 7.3, pH 8), which enhances its usability in drug delivery applications. The discussion Committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Iman Ismail Ahmed mejzaz, with the membership of assistant professor Dr. Huda Abdul Razzaq Younis and teacher Dr. Amna Farouk Sanalla, and under the supervision and membership of experienced professor Dr. Fawzi Habib Gabriel Ibrahim. At the end of the discussion, the committee praised the scientific effort exerted in the thesis and its applied importance in the medical and pharmaceutical fields. On the sidelines of the discussion, on behalf of the dean of the Faculty of science, professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, the head of the Department of chemistry, assistant professor Dr. Firas Ahmed dhanon, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to assistant professor Dr. Huda Abdul Razzaq Younis Al-Bakri, in appreciation of her scientific efforts and active participation in the dissertation discussion Committee, and in appreciation of her giving and contributions to support the scientific and academic process. We wish the student and all the students and teachers of our college success and success. Government information and Communication Division Sunday, September 6, 2026
