Defense of a Higher Diploma Thesis at the College of Computer Science and Mathematics – Department of Computer Science, by student Waqas Ibrahim Ahmed Khader Al-Dulaimi.
On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, a Higher Diploma thesis titled ” An Intelligent Fire And Smoke Detection System Using YOLO Models” was defended in the seminar hall of the College of Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Mosul.
The thesis was presented by student Waqas Ibrahim Ahmed Khader Al-Dulaimi, under the supervision of Dr. Amira Istiqlal Badran Ibrahim.
– The research addressed the design of an intelligent fire and smoke detection system using artificial intelligence techniques.
– The study conducted an experimental comparison between deep learning models (YOLOv5s, YOLOv8n, YOLOv8s) and converted the best-performing model into ONNX format for deployment in a real-time practical application.
– The research aimed to achieve real-time, early detection of fire and smoke to minimize human casualties and material losses, as well as to accelerate response times.
This research contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
1- Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being): Protecting lives and reducing injuries and cases of suffocation caused by toxic gas inhalation.
2- Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): Utilizing artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies to develop innovative, smart safety systems.
3- Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): Enhancing safety and rapid protection measures in residential buildings, facilities, and public infrastructure.
The examination committee consisted of:
Prof. Dr. Baidaa Ibrahim Khalil (Chair)
Dr. Wael Waadallah Mahmoud (Member)
Dr. Amira Istiqlal Badran Ibrahim (Member and Supervisor)
