master’s thesis for student “Mohammed Sami Ismail Mohieddin”

A master’s thesis was discussed at the College of Computer Science and Mathematics – Computer Science Department titled: “Intelligent Detection of Cigarette Smokers in Smart City Application”.

a master’s thesis for student “Mohammed Sami Ismail Mohieddin” was discussed in the discussion hall of the College of Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Mosul on Thursday, 24/7/2025, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Fawziya Mahmoud Ramo. The thesis addressed the design of an intelligent system using YOLO networks to detect smoking cases and identify smokers within smart city environments, aiming to reduce pollution and enhance public health, in support of achieving sustainable development goals. The study addressed building two datasets for smoking cases and smoker identities, training YOLO models on them, and testing them on images, videos, and in real time, in addition to developing a mobile application to send instant alerts.

The study aims to create an accurate and efficient intelligent system for detecting smokers in public places, contributing to reducing exposure to passive smoking, thereby achieving the third goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (good health and well-being), and supporting the eleventh goal (sustainable cities and communities) by promoting a healthy and safe urban environment.

The discussion committee consisted of:

Ass. Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Maher Saleh, Chair

Ass. Prof. Dr. Sama Tali’a Aziz, Member
