The thesis addressed the design and development of a fully offline, multimodal augmented reality system that guides non-technical operators in real time through complex mechanical maintenance in high-noise industrial environments, in line with Industry 5.0 and sustainability principles.
The study discussed the challenges of conventional industrial maintenance: the cognitive load of interpreting two-dimensional diagrams, relating them to the actual equipment and tracking the procedural sequence; the operator’s hands being occupied; voice-control accuracy degrading in noise; and existing systems’ reliance on connectivity.
The thesis aimed to build an integrated framework combining markerless recognition via Vuforia Model Target, a Level 1 interactive digital model with an exploded 3D view, and offline voice control through Vosk supported by a novel Sound Pressure Level adaptation algorithm sustaining usable accuracy across 50-90 dB, validated through a controlled between-subjects experiment with twenty non-technical participants.
This thesis contributes to the following Sustainable Development Goals: –
- Goal (9): Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through developing an innovative maintenance-support framework that runs on commodity hardware without specialised infrastructure.
- Goal (12): Responsible Consumption and Production, through a 51.4% reduction in execution errors and the consequent reduction in material waste from damaged components.
- Goal (8): Decent Work and Economic Growth, through a 55% reduction in operator cognitive workload and a 30.11% reduction in task completion time.
